April 04, 2012 – Shoppers at the Trinity-Conception Square were entertained Wednesday night as a small contingent of 589’s Band members marched through the mall to kick of the Easter season. The band has participated in the T.C. Square Easter Bunny welcome for many years, and look forward to carrying on the tradition for years to come.
The Squadron Staff would like to thank the members of the band for making themselves available to participate in this event. C.I. Parsons received many comments from the mall staff and event organizers on the great job.
Have a great easter break!

March 11th, 2012 - The 589 Carbonear, Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron Band competed in the 2012 Tri-Service Band competition at HMCS Cabot in St. John’s against eight other cadet bands from across Newfoundland & Labrador. The Band performed a nine minute marching-musical display where they were judged on musicality, military drill, showmanship, and dress.
We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate to the Squadron Band for winning the “Best Overall Band” in the competition. Your hard work, extra practices, and dedication paid off. You have made your Squadron, your fellow cadets, parents and officers very proud.
Job well done!

On behalf of the Squadron’s Officers and the Sponsor, we wanted to pass along a huge thank you to all the cadets who participated in the Annual Carbonear Santa Claus Parade on Sunday Dec. 11.
We had close to 100% attendance and have received many great comments from parents, supporters of the Squadron, ex-cadets and complete strangers on your performance. The Squadron Band did an awesome job and we tip our hat to all the new band members on completing their first parade.
And how can I not mention 589’s own marching Christmas carollers led by the Squadron's Flag Party – your attempts to sing along with the band didn’t go unnoticed and brought a smile to the faces of the parades spectators. Maybe this is the start of a new 589 tradition...
The Santa Claus parade is the coldest and the longest parade we participate in all year and you all did a great job.
MERRY CHRISTMAS 589!!

For the 22 Cadets and five Officers, it was the culmination of many months of preparation, and an opportunity to display their knowledge, deportment and leadership abilities.
The conduct did not go unnoticed by Ches Ash, the deputy mayor of the Town of Carbonear.
Mr. Ash made a powerful speech during the closing banquet about the value of the Cadet movement and how it can benefit today’s youth.
"The Cadet Program contributes to sound character development and leadership ability in our youth," he said. "Any investment in the development of youth is a sound investment". Ash also took the opportunity to debunk the common belief that most teenagers are lazy and ill-natured. Ash, a retired educator, suggested that most young people are highly motivated and ambitious. "We can see that here today," he said to the assembled Officers, Cadets and family members.
Mr. Eddy Russell, the civilian Reviewing Officer for the ACR, echoed Ash's remarks by emphasizing the real-world benefits of participating in the Cadet movement. Mr. Russell continued by congratulating the Cadets on a successful afternoon, stating "I truly enjoyed the opportunity of being your RO and am impressed with your deportment and the detail of the displays presented this afternoon".
